How to grow Giloy at Home

Things required

  • A Clay Pot
  • Some soil from a nearby nursery or your personal garden
  • Pre-purchased Giloy seeds
  • Some water to replenish the dry plants.

Steps to grow Giloy at Home

  • Step 1: Buy a few Giloy seeds online or from your nearby nursery. Wash them nicely and soak the seeds in cold water for a single day.
  • Step 2: Bring in the clay pot and add a bit of soil to it. The pot must have a hole on its surface to let the water drain out thereby preventing waterlogging and root rot.
  • Step 3: The third step focuses on the soil mix which should be mixed with the soil. Prepare a potting mix with 50% garden soil from the backyard, 30% organic compost bought from the local market, and 10% sand or peat.
  • Step 4: The next step is to add the seed to the soil with the potting mix and mix them thoroughly. While doing so make sure that the seeds do not reach too deep into the soil because this will cause problems in the seed sprout.
  • Step 5: Pour in the minimum amount of water so that the soil becomes moist. This will, in turn, prevent excess waterlogging and also the clogging of the roots.
  • Step 6: Keep the plant under direct sunlight and water it when the soil gets dry. Water it often in the first few days to keep the dryness away from the plant. Immediately after two weeks, you will see new sprouting on the seeds, formation of new roots, and eventual growth of a few fresh and green leaves on the plant.

Essential requirements for the growth of the Giloy Plant

Water Requirement

Giloy Plant does not require a large amount of water. You need to water the plant once or twice a week depending upon the condition of the soil. Hence, if the condition of the soil is a tad bit dry then you have to water it well. If the soil is too moist skip watering for a week and you will be good to go.

Light Requirement

Giloy thrives extremely well in indirect sunlight. Hence, if you have a window it is better to keep the potted plant near the window sill. This will prevent the plant from getting excessive sun and will prevent it from eventually bolting or wilting away.

Suitable Climate

Most of the climates are suitable for the growth of the Giloy Plant. It can thrive extremely well up to an altitude of 320 meters. Extreme freezing conditions are not great for the plant though. Mild warm temperatures are the best for this plant.

Soil Requirement

Most soils are suitable for the healthy growth of the Giloy Plant. It can grow in any kind of soil provided that all the other suitable conditions are well maintained. Hence, giloy is a plant that does not need much care if grown under suitable conditions.

Growing Season

The best time for growing this plant is from the Spring season to the Summer Season. Giloy plants form vines across the yard where you will grow them. They will give your garden a fresh and greenish look. This will give your garden a lustrous greenish tinge.

Fertilizer Requirement

Plough the land properly so that it becomes porous and permeable. Eventually, this will help in the seepage of more fertilizers. Hence, it will help in the better growth of the plants. Any Nitrogen-based fertilizer will be the best for the growth of Guduchi. Avoid chemical-based fertilizers or pesticides. These plants grow the best in an organic environment.

Care for Giloy Plant

These plants grow by themselves pretty well. They do not need extra care as such. The above-mentioned temperature conditions, soil conditions, and lighting conditions are to be strictly maintained for the healthy growth of the plant.
